1286221 De-scaling ferrous articles; coating with silicon SOC WENDEL-SIDELOR 19 April 1971 [9 Feb 1970] 20853/71 Headings C7E and C7F Scale is removed from ferrous articles, after rolling, and the surface protected from oxidation by a layer of silicon by passing the articles through a chlorine containing silicon compound at 800 to 1200‹ C. The compound may be methyl- or ethyltrichloro-silane, dimethyl-dichloro-silane or triphenylchloro-silane, and may include an inert filler e.g. chalk or silica. A hot rolled strip 2 passes into and out of a chamber through inert gas, e.g. nitrogen or argon seals 4, 5. The compound is sprayed through three sets of nozzles 15 and recycled. In a modification, Figs.3 and 4 (not shown) the compound is sprayed as a vapour. Alternatively the compound may be used as an emulsion in a carrier gas.
|
