The method describes the process of locating the points which are facing in the search direction between the start and destination of a route. For each of these sets of points (for example W1), in addition to references (ref. FGl12, ref. Gl11) relating to track elements (FGl12, Gl11) following in the search direction, information (1, 0) relating to how the search process is to be continued is stored. For this purpose, the tracks of a railway station are combined in target groups (ZG0 to ZG8) in such a way that each track element (e.g. Gl10) is assigned to a single target group (ZG0) and each target group comprises a plurality of target tracks. The element-related information (1, 0) which is stored for reference access is assigned to the individual target groups and indicates whether the respective target group, and with it the target track, can be reached via one or other reference (ref. FGl12, ref. Gl11) stored for a track element (Gl10). The information is stored and called up in a target group-oriented fashion. <IMAGE>
