Process for feeding a layered charge into spark ignition engines in which a rich gas mixture is used in the region of the ignition plug (5) and a linear mixture is used elsewhere. The rich mixture is fed at pressure to the ignition plug trough compression slots (16, 18). In one embodiment, at least one strongly accelerated eddy is formed in the middle of the combustion chamber (12) by the type and shape of the latter, as well as by the position of the compression slots. In this way a very low fuel consumption is achieved, with minimal CO, CH and NOx contents. The engine can be operated with a mixture having an overall composition of 1,5 Lambda and above, whereas in the region of the spark plug a good ignition mixture of 0,8 to 1 Lambda is available.
