To lock an extending table in its extended position, a movable catch plate is provided, which engages into a locking bar connected to the table top only when the extension leaves are raised. When pulling out the table top, this movable catch plate is raised by the raising of the extension leaf with the aid of a sloping slide-up surface of a control wedge and is then able to lock into an indentation in the locking bar. When the extension leaves are lowered, the locking bar rests on a supporting surface which lies higher than the top edge of the movable catch plate. Consequently, automatic locking of the extending table in the extended position is possible. To lock the table top in its basic position, there is provided a fixed tongue into which the same or a further indentation in the locking bar engages. To unlock the table top from its basic position or extended position, the user must actuate the locking bar and lift the locked-in indentation out of the associated catch part.
