A process for the preparation of 2-methyl-6-nitrophenol I <IMAGE> is characterized in that 2-methyl-6-nitroaniline is reacted with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution at elevated temperature. The product 2-methyl-6-nitrophenol I is obtained in analytical-grade purity and in virtually quantitative yield.
