PURPOSE:To obtain a cathode catalyst especially suitable for a phosphate type fuel cell, by such a safe and simple process that an aqueous solution of vanadium chloride is contacted with a platinum supported catalyst and, after a pH value is brought to an alkaline, vanadium chloride is reduced to form a platinum/vanadium mixture which is, in turn, heat-treated. CONSTITUTION:After an aqueous solution of vanadium trichloride is sufficiently contacted with a dispersion of a platinum supported catalyst, an aqueous sodium carbonate solution is added to the resulting mixture to adjust the pH value thereof to an alkaline and a reducing agent such as an aqueous formic acid solution is subsequently added thereto to reduce vanadium trichloride. Next, the solid component is washed, dried, ground and heat-treated to obtain a platinum/vanadium alloy catalyst. Both of platinum and vanadium may be simultaneously supported by the carrier such as acetylene black. As mentioned above, because alcohol is not used as is conventional at the time of the addition of vanadium, the catalyst can be safely prepared by a simple process. |
