PURPOSE:To produce magnetic metallic powder having oxidation stability, affinity for a resin and dispersion stability in the stage of preparing a coating compd. by oxidizing the surface of the magnetic metallic powder essentially consisting of iron to bring the powder into contact with a specific gaseous org. compd. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic metallic powder essentially consisting of Fe and having <=10 axial ratio and <=0.3mum average major axis length or the granules consisting thereof are contacted with an inert gas such as N2 or He contg. 0.01-0.4vol% O2 at <=150 deg.C to oxidize the surface. A gaseous substance of the org. compd. contg. double bonds or triple bonds in the molecules, for example, compd. contg. a carbonyl group such as formaldehyde or arom. compd. such as benzene is contacted therewith at <=100 deg.C temp. The magnetic metallic powder adequate for magnetic recording such as magnetic tape, magnetic disk or magnetic card is thus produced. |
