PURPOSE:To enable high-grade printing even when rough paper is used, by applying printing energy to a thermal transfer medium at the first row of heat- generating elements to transfer an overcoat layer to recording paper in the printing direction thereof and further applying printing energy different from the first one to the thermal transfer medium at the second row of heat- generating elements to apply printing to the overcoat layer. CONSTITUTION:Preset high printing energy is applied to the heat generating element 4a of a thermal head 4 to transfer the overcoat layer 21 of a printing ribbon 6 to recording paper 1a. By this method, only the part having the overcoat layer 21 transferred thereto of the recording paper 1a has smoothness. Further, by applying preset low printing energy to heat-generating element 4b, an ink layer 22 is melted to be transferred to the overcoat layer. Because the penetration of the ink in the recording paper is not almost generated, high- quality printing imparting a sharp printing edge can be obtained. |
