The fuel mixtures for internal combustion engines contain less than approx. 0.5 g of lead per litre of fuel. The fuel mixture comprises a relatively large proportion of a liquid hydrocarbon fuel and a lesser, property-improving proportion of (A) at least one hydrocarbon-soluble alkali metal- or alkaline-earth metal-containing mixture and (B) at least one hydrocarbon-soluble, ash-free dispersing agent. When a mixture of (A) and (B) is incorporated into petrol which contains less than approx. 0.5g of lead per litre of fuel, the treated fuel exhibits improved stability and water tolerance, and, when the fuel mixtures according to the invention are used in internal combustion engines, there is a substantial reduction in valve seat wear.
