In order to prevent the picture from being "blurred" in an optical contrast scanning method, particularly when CCD photodiodes are used, when the object being scanned is moved in the direction of the measuring axis during two immediately successive scanning processes, the exposure time and the scanning time are synchronised with one another in such a manner that the photocells are alternatingly subjected to the exposure at predetermined exposure intervals for scanning. This is advantageously done by using a stroboscopic lamp as the light source or by arranging an inertialess shutter in the beam path.
