Hospital bed with a support frame (4) in which a top frame part (1) and a central frame part (2) on which there is hinged a bottom frame part are mounted so as to be pivotable about swivelling axes (10, 20) and whose top frame part (1) can be pivoted in controlled fashion by a force transmitter (42). A gear (1A, 12; 2A, 12B) is located between the top and central frame parts (1, 2). The gear does not effect any angular adjustment of the central frame part (2) within a predetermined range of set angles (W) of the top frame part, the central frame part and the bottom frame part being held horizontally. There is a pivoting angle transmission ratio of approximately 2:1 initially beyond the range of set angles (W), which ratio increases thereafter due to the change of the effective lever arms. Various embodiments of the gear (1A, 12; 2A, 12B) are shown. There is shown a gear release device. <IMAGE>
