The chamber furnace serves for the heat treatment of metal workpieces by means of convection. In order to avoid if possible, especially in a treatment space of relatively great length, temperature differences between its ends, the gas flow in the treatment space is from time to time reversed. To generate the gas flow, there is provided at each end of the chamber furnace at least one blower (12, 12a), which blowers alternately give rise to gas flows in opposite directions. To this end, shut-off and regulating members (15, 16 or 15a, 16a) are provided, with which in each case one of the two blowers (12 or 12a) can be connected into the flow circuit. The blower (12 or 12a) which in each case is excluded from the circuit remains in operation during the entire treatment time so that by merely actuating the shut-off and regulating members (15, 16 or 15a, 16a) the flow direction inside the treatment space (7) can be reversed in a very short time. Additionally, with the aid of the shut-off and regulating members (15 or 15a), the flow speed in the treatment space (7) can be changed. <IMAGE>
