The design of the cover means that it can be placed on sheet metal barrels, despite deformation of the latter. This type of cover is also suitable for transporting the barrels. This embodiment is composed of two parts which are welded together. The first part is a disc (3) which forms the upper closure and is bent downwards (5) beyond the edge of the barrel. This downward bending makes it possible to protect the inner extensible cylinder part (6). This extensible cylinder part is slipped over and encloses the barrel, ensuring that the lid is held in an optimum manner. Any eccentricities in the barrel do not affect the way in which the held lid fits, as the circumference is constant. The contents are therefore protected in an optimum manner. Thanks to the upper part of the lid made of hard material, the barrel can also be dumped in the open air, as the running-off of rainwater is guaranteed. <IMAGE>
