A method and a device are proposed for the operation of an internal combustion engine in conjunction with an automatic transmission and idling control. If backwards rolling of the vehicle on a gradient is detected when a forwards gear is engaged, increased idling air is metered by way of the idling control so that the internal combustion engine can deliver increased torque in order to maintain the stationary condition of the vehicle. <IMAGE>
