A separator has an inlet-side downflow baffle (2) and an outlet-side upflow baffle (3). The lower edge (9) of the downflow baffle (2) defines the lower limit (10) of the low-viscosity liquid, while the upper edge (11) of the upflow baffle (3) defines the upper limit (12) of the settling solids. There is such a distance between the lower limit (10) of the low-viscosity liquid and the upper limit (12) of the settling solids that a turbulence-free flow of the sewage takes place in the intermediate region. <IMAGE>
