In the production of electronic typewriters or office machines of similar design, particular setting operations are necessary, e.g. the setting of the zero-position switch of the horizontal drive to a zero-position bit pattern of the stepping motor. For this purpose, complex measuring equipment and expensive aids are conventionally required in order to indicate the electrical state of the apparatus in each case during the setting. The invention is based on the object of simplifying the abovementioned setting of the zero-position switch and making it less expensive. This object is achieved in that the switch (34) can be actuated by the movable component (4) in the outermost edge position, and in that the position of the switch (34) can be scanned by the activated microprocessor (20) and can be indicated in the closed position in a display (25) which, during the printing operation, indicates a different operating state of the machine. The setting of the zero-position switch to a zero-position bit pattern of the stepping motor is thus very simple without requiring measuring apparatuses to be connected to the electronic devices of the machine for this purpose. Additionally, the setting of the zero-position switch is also possible at the customer's premises. Considerable cost savings are thus achieved. <IMAGE>
