For the simultaneous separating and notching of backs of books, a blade-like separating and notching plate is used which has a cutting edge running over the length of the back of the book and is of meandering, partially corrugated or similar construction. The separating and notching surfaces have a vertical boundary surface on the front facing the book block and, on the averted back, a boundary surface which runs at an acute angle. The individual separating and notching surfaces are of groove-like construction, extending away from the cutting edge.
