A furnace (10) with an arched top wall (18) consists in each vertical stone layer of four specially shaped corner stones (12) and, arranged in each case between these, two connection plates (14). Top wall (18) and bottom wall (22) are thus identically designed and arranged in a mirror-symmetrical manner. For furnaces of greater height, side wall stones (16) are additionally provided. The three-part top wall (18) is self-supporting and guarantees great dimensional stability as the connection plate (14) is hooked together positively with the corner stones (12). <IMAGE>
