An electromagnetic field is applied to metal passing through the junction, between the tundish nozzle and the cooled mould, of a horizontal continuous casting installation. The field reduces the cross-sectional area of the metal stream, sepg. it from the inne surface of the nozzle before the junction, and allowing it to come into contact with the mould beyond. It is regulated to produce an even peripheral distribution of metal around the mould. Several methods of regulation of the field are proposed, together with alternative types and positions of sensors, for controlling the regulation.
