NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is lower alkyl). EXAMPLE:3-Cyano-3-methyl-3-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)propionaldehyde. USE:A synthetic intermediate of remedy for cardiovascular diseases, peripheral vessel disorder and cerebral circulation disorder. PREPARATION:The objective compound of formula I can be produced by hydrolyzing an alpha-alkyl-alpha-cyanophenylacetaldehyde diethylacetal derivative of formula II in an aqueous solvent (e.g. a mixture of water and methanol) in the presence of an acid (e.g. oxalic acid) at a temperature between room temperature and the refluxing temperature of the solvent.
