The filter vessel contains granular filter material and serves to treat water. At the bottom, the filter vessel has a closable outlet. To remove the filter material outside the filter operation, compressed air is passed into the vessel, as a result of which the filter material, together with water, is displaced through the outlet. The vessel can be provided in the lower region with a gas-permeable plate, the opening of the outlet being in the plate and the feed line for compressed air being situated beneath the plate.
