Prior to resistance welding of plates, e.g. Fe or other alloy, the Zn on Sn surface layers are removed by a milling cutter at least down to parent plate level. Surface removal is generally from extreme outside surfaces of plates, but with thicker plates may also be from inside faces. Shape of cut may be circular, grooved or channeled etc. Electrical contact may be established between plates by conventional pincer, and welding current may be localised by means of thin thermoplastic strip between plates. Molten metal bath or electrolytic cell situated behind welding discs may be used to replace surface surface coating removed by cutter. Method reduces alloying of Cu electrodes. |
