Carbonamides are prepared from carboxylic acids and ammonia in the presence of a catalytic amount of a hydrated oxide. Preferably a hydrated titanium-, zirconium- or tin oxide in an amount between 0.05 to 10% by weight is used. The hydrated oxide contains at least 4% of water.
