1344402 Preparation of carboxylic acid-amide mixtures PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 15 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 28017/72 Heading C2C A carboxylic acid-amide mixture is prepared by (i) reacting, in aqueous solution, a primary or secondary amine hydrohalide with at least one equivalent of a carboxylic acid per equivalent of amine hydrohalide in the presence of a catalytic amount of a phosphoric acid (or a salt thereof), a phosphoric acid precursor, a hexaalkyl-phosphoramide (C 1- C 5 alkyl) or sulphuric acid; (ii) distilling the mixture prepared in step (i) at a temperature above 180‹ C., and (iii) separating the distillate into a water-hydrogen halide fraction and a carboxylic acid-amide fraction. The term " phosphoric acid precursors " include phosphorus pentoxide, phosphorus pentachloride and phosphorus oxychloride. The preferred carboxylic acids are formic, acetic, propionic and butyric and the preferred amine hydrohalides are those containing C 1 -C 4 alkyl groups.
