NEW MATERIAL:A red anthraquinone dye of formula I [wherein R is a (hydroxy)alkyl, an alkoxyalkyl, an (alkyl-substituted) phenyl, etc.; Y is OH or NH2]. EXAMPLE:The dye of formula II. USE:A low-cost red dye for an optical filter having excellent sublimation coloring characteristics, heat resistance, spectral properties, and durability. PREPARATION:For example, 1-amino-2-phenoxy-4-hydroxyanthraquinone obtained by reacting 1-amino-2-bromo-4-hydroxyanthraquinone with phenol in the pres ence of an alkali is reacted with 1,6-hexanediol to give 1-amino-2-(omega- hydroxyhexyloxy)-4-hydroxyanthraquinone.
