Method for decaying a substrate 3 generating methane gas, for example dead animals, food debris, kitchen refuse, waste water, plant and vegetable matter and farm yard manure, in a number of containers 2-2n for the purpose of obtaining methane gas 4 from the decayed substrate in question. The pressure of the methane gas formed during the decaying process is used at least as a transporting means for conveying substrate between containers 2-2n, 10 used in the decaying method. The methane gas formed during the decaying process is preferably used for driving, for example, drying devices, mills 16, dewatering devices 18 or other energy-consuming devices included in the installation. Digester gas formed is used to operate the installation, which means it is possible to avoid using pumps and other mechanical means which may be affected by the often aggressive environment in the installation.
