PURPOSE:To obtain a thermal head optimized for high printing quality even when low smoothness paper is used as transfer paper, by constituting said thermal head so that the uppermost part of a heat generating element is higher than the uppermost part of an electrode. CONSTITUTION:The configurational dimension of a partial glaze layer 3 is set so that the height H2 of the uppermost top surface of a heat generating element 4 larger than the height H1 of the uppermost parts of electrodes 7, 8. By this setting, because the thickness of the protective layer 9 formed on the upper layer of the electrodes 7, 8 and the opening part A of the heat generating element 4 by vapor deposition is usually uniform, the height H4 of the uppermost part of the protective layer 9a on the upper layer of the opening part A of the heat generating element 4 is larger than the height H3 of the uppermost part of the protective layer 9b on the electrodes 7, 8. If dimensional relation is set as mentioned above, the protective layer 9a on the upper layer of the opening part A of the heat generating element 4 is brought into contact with the surface of transfer paper first of all through an ink ribbon 5. From the result of experiment, if it is set that H2 is larger than H1 by about 5mum or more and H4 similarly is larger than H3 by about 5mum or more, the good contact of the protective layer with the surface of low smoothness paper is obtained. |
