Slurry, contg. (wt.%) 65-85 solids, 15-35 water and 0.01-4.0 polyelectrolyte dispersing agent relative to coal has; (a) Brookfield viscosity below 4000 cP(measured at 75 wt.% solids, ambient temp. and 60 rpm); (b) yield stress 0.1-10 Pascals; (c) 5-36 wt.% of coal particles smaller than 3 microns, with a net zeta potential of 15-85 millivolts; (d) at least 85 wt.% of particles smaller than 300 microns; and (e) particle size distribution for the coal compact given by CFPT=100(Dn-Dsn), (CFPT= cumulative wt.%, dry base, of particles of dia. below D:DL= dia. of the largest particle in the compact, being about 38-400 microns; DS=dia. of the smallest particle in the compact, and n=about 0.2-0.5).
