The invention describes a device, making it possible to change silently into reverse gear, for a gearbox with a gear train. According to the invention, the device comprises a device, with wheels for reversing the direction of running housed in a casing 1, 2 composed of an intermediate wheel 7 permanently meshing in a gear 6 of the input shaft 4, as well as an axially movable claw coupling wheel 8 which can be brought to mesh with teeth 40 securely fastened to the output shaft 41. A reverse-gear shaft 5 carries the intermediate wheel 7 and the claw coupling wheel 8. A synchronising device 3, acting on the casing, brakes the claw coupling wheel before engagement of the latter in the teeth 40 of the output shaft 41. It comprises a braking ring 16 equipped with a conical surface 17 which can be thrust axially, by the claw coupling wheel 8, against a conjugate conical surface 15 which is fixed relative to the casing.
