The device G for guiding a machine with respect to a reference line, such as a row of plants or a ploughing furrow, comprises means for detecting the spacing of an element connected to the machine with respect to the reference line and activation means A which are linked up to the detection means and are capable of causing the machine to move with respect to the ground in a direction causing the detected spacing to be reduced. The device G comprises centring means C capable, on horizontal ground, of moving the machine along a predetermined line, and control means J which are linked up to the detection means and are capable of putting these centring means C into operation as soon as the detecting means stop delivering a signal corresponding to a detected spacing. <IMAGE>
