The invention relates to a precision length-measuring system, preferably for large lengths, the aim of which is to increase measurement accuracy. The object of the invention is chiefly to avoid strains and measurement errors caused by thermal influences, and to reduce the intrinsic weight of the measuring system in conjunction with increased rigidity. The measuring system comprises a housing in which there are provided a material measure and a scanning arrangement which scans the latter. The housing consists of a high-performance-fibre-reinforced metal or plastic material whose coefficient of thermal expansion corresponds to that of the material measure to the greatest possible extent.
