This mixture of liquid crystals consists of: - at least one 1-(alkylcyclohexyl)-2-(alkylfluorobiphenylyl)ethane of formula: <IMAGE> in which R<1> and R<2>, which may be identical or different, are alkyl radicals having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, and - at least one compound chosen from: a) alkylfluorophenyl alkylbicyclooctanecarboxylates, b) biphenylbicyclohexyldialkyls, c) dicyanoalkoxyphenyl alkylcyclohexylcarboxylates, d) bicyclohexylcarbonitriledialkyls, e) dicyanoalkoxyphenyl alkylcyclohexylbenzoates and f) cyclohexylbiphenyls. The use of such mixtures makes it possible to obtain an increased rate of multiplexability in display devices operating by the effect of electrically controlled birefringence. <IMAGE>
