The machine is based on a two-pole three-phase asynchronous motor with a stator-to-rotor ratio of 1:1. The stator windings are fed from a 380 volt, 50 Hz three-phase supply; the stator and rotor windings being star-connected. When the rotor is stationary, a 380 volt supply is connected to the rotor skip-rings and an auxiliary motor is used to bring the rotor speed up to 3000 r.p.m. When the speed reaches 3000 r.p.m., the supply is fed in phase opposition to the slip-rings until the speed reaches 6000 r.p.m. - The stator and rotor can then be fed with supplies in the same phase. The same phase changes can be used with a mechanically driven alternator. The double speed means that the motor can produce twice the mechanical power as a conventional motor, or an alternator can produce twice the output wattage. |
