A battery cathode comprises a substrate having a coating thereon comprising MoO2. The coating is formed by heating a suspension of molybdenum sulphide to convert it at least partially to MoO2 before or after application to the substrate. Oxidation may be to MoO3 followed by reduction. A cell comprises a lithium anode a non aqueous electrolyte and a cathode comprising MoO2.
