1419928 Projectile fuzes MOTOROLA Inc 26 April 1974 [29 May 1973] 18403/74 Heading F3A A fuze for a free-falling projectile, comprises: an air turbine 12 for winding a spring 24 during a first time interval; timing means 28 for releasing the energy in the spring following a second time interval which encompasses the first time interval; a rotor 42 responsive to the spring for bringing a detonator into an armed position; and a clutch for disengaging the turbine and coupling the spring to the rotor prior to the release of the spring by the timer means. The clutch comprises a rotatable cam surface 18b which is driven by the turbine and moves a slider 30 leftwards to disengage teeth 19a from a ratchet wheel 19b whilst drawing a rotor driving element 27b into engagement with a ratchet wheel 27a. The timing means 28 is actuated by a lanyard and withdraws a locking pawl 28a from the ratchet wheel 27a at the expiry of the second time interval. As the rotor rotates towards the armed position, an inclined surface 42a, Fig. 4a, forming the base of a groove in the rotor displaces a spring-loaded rod 46 to the left to indicate that the fuze is armed. To disarm the fuze, the rod is moved manually further to the left so that the rod is withdrawn from the groove in the rotor which then rotates beyond the armed position and into a safe position. |
