PURPOSE:In the production of ethanol by the reaction of methanol, CO and H2 in the presence of a cobalt-tert-phosphine-carbonyl complex catalyst, a part of the circulating catalyst is separated and recovered by a combination of a simple alkali treatment process and a hydrocarbon solvent extraction process. CONSTITUTION:Methanol is made to react with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of cobalt-tert-phosphine-carbonyl complex. Ethanol, methanol and the reaction solvent are distilled out from the resultant reaction liquid. A part of the residue (circulation catalyst liquid) is extracted for regeneration, treated with an aqueous solution of an alkali such as NaHCO3, NaOH, KOH, etc., and the active catalyst component is extracted with a hydrocarbon solvent such as benzene, toluene, etc., to enable the separation and recovery of the catalyst without degrading the active component of the catalyst.
|
