Surfactants derived from dicarboxylic hydroxyacids having the general formula: wherein R<2> is H or -OH; R, R min are equal to or different form each other and represent H, a metal ion, -NH4, a cation of an organic amine base or a group having the formula: -An-R<3> (II) wherein A is a C2-C4 oxyalkylene group, n is a number of from 1 to 20, R<3> is a C8-C20 alkyl group, wherein at least one of said R, R<1> is a group -An-R<3> and wherein the -OH group(s) of the compound of formula (I) can be esterified or etherified.
