The control device for a motor vehicle automatic transmission has a main pressure control valve (1) for generating a main pressure, varying as a function of the operating condition, for the actuation of gear shift elements of the transmission and a solenoid control pressure valve (2) for generating a control pressure, varying as a function of the load state of the engine, which pressure acts on an active surface (6a) of the control piston (3) of the main pressure control valve (1). In order to achieve the most accurate and problem-free main pressure control possible, it is proposed that the solenoid control pressure valve (2) be designed to generate a control pressure increasing in direct proportion to the engine load and that the control pressure be applied to an active surface (6a), loaded by a spring (11), of the control piston (3) of the main pressure control valve (1) counter to the main pressure acting on at least one counter-surface (6b; 7a). <IMAGE>
