For the purpose of achieving a narrow A-pillar with minimum reduction of the angle of vision of the driver of the vehicle, the A-pillar (6) is composed of two profile parts (4, 5) along pairs of welded flanges (11, 12; 13, 14), the first welded flanges (11, 12) extending in opposite directions in the cross-section through the A-pillar (6) and parallel to the windscreen (15) so that the outer one of these two welded flanges forms a bearing surface (16) for bonding on the windscreen (15); the other two welded flanges (13, 14) point outwards. One of the two profile parts (5) has a zone (21) of reduced rigidity, extending perpendicular to the cross-section through the A-pillar (6), at the foot of its first welded flange (12). To produce a gap (17) for the introduction of a welding electrode (18) during the welding of the first welded flanges (11, 12), said profile part (5) is bent around the zone (21) of reduced rigidity into its final shape only after production of the welded joint of the first welded flanges (11, 12), such that the second welded flanges (13, 14) only rest one on the other after this has been done (Figure 2). <IMAGE>
