A fire and flame retardant and heat transfer retardant material formed as a mixture of chemical components including ammonium sulfate, borax, dimethyl sulfoxide and an activating/conditioning agent selected from the group including boric acid, zinc oxide and Clayber salts. The resulting mixture is a substantially dry powder which may be combined with carriers such as water, paint or glue for application to various surfaces. The material is adapted for use in a wide variety of applications, among the most notable being treatment of painted flammable items, shingles, insulation and metal structural elements, adn the creation of firebreaks by dispersal in the path of fires. The material is nontoxic and may be used in myriad situations wherein it is desirable to prevent or limit flame spread and heat transfer. |
