Process and device for irradiating an object (2) with ionizing radiation, in particular a source of X or gamma radiation (3), the said object being packed in transport units which have an axis of symmetry parallel to a transport direction or to the longest trajectory of the source of radiation. The invention is characterized by the fact that the object to be irradiated is brought to a position close to the source of radiation and in a position distant from the said source of radiation, that the object to be irradiated, once in the near position screens the object to be irradiated in the distant position, that the screening effect near the axis of symmetry is less than in the peripheral region and that the object to be irradiated is moved in such a way that it is irradiated from at least two sides. In this way a high level of efficiency is achieved together with a remarkable homogeneity in the absorbed radiation. |
