A device used to generate on an object, in particular within a human eye (40), a laser spot of controllable size. This device includes a focussing arrangement (60) which reproduces the laser beam with a small focussing spot and a large apertural cone on the object, and a deflecting arrangement (70) which displaces the focussing spot over the desired surface of the irradiation spot (II) according to a predetermined scanning pattern. In this way it is possible to treat, for example, large surfaces of any desired form on the fundus of the eye without damaging the front sections thereof.
