Operation of a manually operated press is made more reliable by providing a return stroke lock for the operating lever, which lock is only automatically released when the pressing stroke of the ram has been completed. This prevents termination of the pressing action before it has been completed and the resulting production of rejects or pressed articles of reduced quality.
