DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM FOR A FINANCIAL ENVIRONMENT

A data processing system for a financial environment includes a plurality of peripherals such as a magnetic strip reader (18), a printer (20), and a keyboard (22) which are coupled to a personal computer (10) by an adapter board (30) which is inserted into an interface bus (28) within the personal computer (10). The adapter board (30) includes an outbound data latch (84), an inbound data latch (86) and a status latch (88). A peripheral interface driver (68) in the personal computer enables the system to run multi-tasking operations in a single tasking system. An encryptor/decryptor processor (94) which is used in handling secure data, is located on the adapter board (30) to reduce the risk of unauthorized access to secure data.
