PRODUCTION OF FIBER REINFORCED METAL BY INJECTION MOLDING

PURPOSE:To make mass production of products having intricate shapes without the deterioration of reinforcing fibers and the formation of preforms by subjecting the molding obtd. by injection molding of a mixture composed of metallic material powder, reinforcing fibers and org. binders to degreasing then to calcination at the m.p. of the above-mentioned metallic material powder or below. CONSTITUTION:The metallic material powder, reinforcing fibers and org. binder are kneaded and the mixture composed thereof is injection-molded by using a desired metallic mold. The injection pressure and injection temp. in this stage are adequately set to adjust the flow rate and to prevent the generation of defects such as blowholes arising from the decomposition of the binder. The molding obtd. by such injection molding is degreased (to remove the org. binder by decomposing and evaporating the same). The calcination operation is executed at the m.p. of the metallic powder or below after the degreasing. The above- mentioned org. binder includes polymer binders such as PE and polystyrene having several ten thousands mol.wt. or below and paraffinic wax having several thousands mol.wt. or below which lender fluidity to the mixture composed of the metallic powder and reinforcing fibers.
