PROTOPLAST FUSION PRODUCT AND PROCESS FOR PREPARING SAME

Protoplast fusion techniques are employed to provide a progenitor plant which is cytoplasmically male sterile but which may also possess such traits as herbicide tolerance and a winter phenotype. Male sterility-conferring mitochondria of the rape plant are characterized genotypically. This allows identification of the parents of the desired fusion product and characterization of the fusion product itself. It also permits production of genotypically consistent seed by providing a means for accurately selecting the parents of a cross from which hybrid seed is produced.
