An image forming apparatus has a light source (16), and one or more liquid crystal units (20) for forming a latent image on the photosensitive drum (1) by controlling the passage of the light from the light source between the light source and the drum. The liquid crystal units have a plurality of shutter arrays (21) arranged with a plurality of microshutters. The microshutter has a miniature region for controlling the passage of the light, and the regions are different at every microshutter for forming the individual shutter arrays.
