A substituted m-aminophenol coupler useful in hair dyeing having the formula <CHEM> and acid addition salts thereof wherein x and y are selected from the group consisting of halogen and the groups OR of which R ist the same or different alkyl, aminoalkyl of hydroxylalkyl groups, at least one for x or y being a group OR and a process for preparing these compounds.
