The interrogation system (11) of the vehicle measures, during one cycle of measurement, the time 2 DELTA T taken by a wave to cover the to-and-fro distance 2Di separating it from a beacon 10 fixed at the starting point of the vehicle. A computer 12 calculates the corresponding distance Di. From this distance Di and the previous coordinates DELTA Xi-1, DELTA Yi-1 and the orientation phi i of the vehicle provided respectively by an on-board computer from the length (di) delivered by the computer 12 and from the orientation phi i-1 of this length (di-1) for the preceding cycle of measurement and by a direction indicator, the computer 12 deduces the length (di) of the chord subtending the elementary path covered by the vehicle since its previous position at coordinates DELTA Xi-1, DELTA Yi-1. Application to target designation between vehicles not in direct sight of each other.

|
