PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF 2-PHENYLETHANOL OR DERIVATIVES THEREOF

The compounds of the general formula I where R<4> is alkanoyl or haloalkanoyl and the other symbols are as defined in Claim 1 are prepared by reacting a compound of the general formula II where Hal is a halogen atom with an alkanecarboxylic acid or with a haloalkanecarboxylic acid, respectively. The corresponding compounds of the general formula I where R<4> is a hydrogen atom are obtained by subsequent alkaline hydrolysis. The process is particularly suitable for preparing dimethylbenzylcarbinol and its esters.
